SouthEastern to Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street

There's a once-a-day parliamentary train that leaves Victoria at 0550 in the morning, that is a South Eastern service that unusually stops at Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street. I went and met Martin early in the morning, and off we went to ride the only train of the day that does this.
This is a parliamentary train, as otherwise there's no service between London and Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street. (Regular London Overground services come to/from Clapham Junction). It was established a few years ago when the Victoria to London Bridge service (via Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye) was abolished.
The train is the 2Y06 Victoria to Ashford International: www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W04783/2019/01/02/advanced

Message to southeastern (From an ex electro star engineer) 377503 needs a new 3 phase inductor in its auxiliary converter module... it never made that noise when I had it at bedford.... to everyone else it’s why there was such a loud buzzing noise ...( it’s not supposed to do that)

+TheSpicyIceCubeXD _ When the units are connected, those surfaces rub against each other. I believe there are two "springs" for lack of a better term pushing the gangway forward, and they won't be of equal springiness, so one side may be pushed harder against the other gangway.

Southeastern said they are going to pass this onto the engineers: https://twitter.com/Se_Railway/status/1081216421047226368 (Now if I could only find out who to talk to to get the "Prabbt! Prabbt! Prabbt! Prabbt!" noise fixed on the PA systems of one of the London Overground trains that does the Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street route, I'd be happy.)

I’m kind of glad you brought this video up Geoff because I experienced some strange services before. For example: Around towards the end of the summer or the beginning of autumn last year, on Saturdays I’ve often seen some Southeastern services at East Croydon that go to Hastings from Charing Cross which was unusual considering it is not shown at least as a limited service on the national rail map. Southeastern can run some strange services every now and then

If Southern were to inherit the Class 377/5s. They could use them on London Victoria/London Bridge-Tattenham Corner, Epsom Downs, Epsom, Wimbledon/Sutton, Reigate, Horsham, Redhill, Caterham & East Grinstead, London Victoria-London Bridge via Peckham Rye and East Croydon-Milton Keynes Central/Tring & Watford Junction (working alongside the Class 377/2 and 5-Car Class 377/7). Or perhaps Southern using the Class 377/5 on Brighton-Eastbourne, Hastings, Seafood and Lewis East Coastway routes and Brighton-Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Central and Portsmouth & Southsea West Coastway routes (working alongside the Class 377/3 and Class 313/2).

Just a few quick questions i need to get off my back: Why don't Southeastern add Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street as stops on their suburban services? For example, Dartford or Orpington services. Also if this parliamentary train runs just so that the line between Victoria and Denmark Hill keeps open then why does it need to stop at those places. Can't London Overground just run a parliamentary train to Victoria instead? (there's already one that goes to Battersea Park so why not?)

High Path
High Path

+TheOriginalWray Remember all this improvements for passengers like deleting services not providing suitable trains etc are all part of your funding from the 3.3% fare increase this year.

+Norbiton Flyer But before London Overground took over Southern trains used to operate trains to those stations. So then why did Southern trains have no problem with stopping at those two stations but Southeastern does? Both operators would face similar issues in terms of passengers and (maybe) fleet. And even then what about off peak times?

Norbiton Flyer
Norbiton Flyer

+TheOriginalWray The Victoria end of the route was severed when platform 3 at Battersea Park was extended to take 12-car trains. The London Bridge end was taken out because Southern has lost three platforms there (to Thameslink (2) and South Eastern (1) and there is no room for little-used two- or four-car trains in the remaining terminal platforms. It is still possible to do the Victoria/London Bridge journey (or intermediate stations) by changing at Peckham Rye. South Eastern's services don't normally stop at Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road because it would delay the service, and possibly crowd out people from further destinations.

TheOriginalWray
TheOriginalWray

Well London Midland seemed to have no problem with sending a packed 4 car unit all the way to Birmingham and an almost empty 8 car unit to Tring lmao. So in short the stations don't meet the specifications of Southeasterns trains. So how come Southern used to be able to run class 455s to Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street then? There must've been some sort of inconvenience or low demand for them to completely stop the operation of that service!

David Shepheard
David Shepheard

+TheOriginalWray Re: "So what's wrong with operating 4 car trains apart from them getting packed?" You have answered your own question. Short trains are a pain in the neck, because they have to make long journeys to the end of the line and back and what can be an off-peak service on one trip is going to land up arriving somewhere else, just as the peak hours kick in. Packed trains are not just annoying, they start to become very dangerous. There have been lots of times I've been standing on Earlsfield Station in the rush hour with people not being able to get on train after train after train and the crowd just pushes forward of the safety line, with passengers standing right on the edge of the platforms. It's not worth having that sort of nonsense on an entire trainline, just to get a service improvement at two stations. It should be possible for the platfoms at Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street to be extended though. (That would also be better than running National Rail trains where you could get off of one 4 car unit, but were locked inside another 4 car unit if you accidentally got on the wrong part of a train.) The best thing the South East can do with 4 car trains is send them up north to all the places that are stuck with awful trains like Pacers.

You've inadvertently pointed out the problem with the Overground. It's a dual voltage train that is clearer at a disadvantage when it uses the third rail. It would be far more efficient if the lines in the South East were converted to overhead lines (I'd start with the Brighton line and the overground).

High Path
High Path

+emmo999 I think it is the condition of the track and the number of junctions and 100mph on commuter trains that are packed with standing passengers is not good. The Southwestern VEPs I think got to 90mph unofficially particulary in last days of service.

emmo999
emmo999

John Airey additionally, Electrostars do not use all their power. Mitrac reports how much kN force each motor is applying and should one motor be down, others will up their power to help accommodate

emmo999
emmo999

John Airey Overground doesn’t get anywhere near 100mph. Equally Electrostars don’t do more than 100mph. In fact, the 378 Capitalstars are geared lower to assist acceleration and are thus limited to 75mph

John Airey
John Airey

+emmo999 even if there's no difference in acceleration there's a 100mph limit on third rail. I've travelled on trains that can reach 70mph over two miles (using 25kv) so I think the Overground could be quicker. Crossrail is using overhead lines. I expect Geoff to do some timing experiments when it opens.

emmo999
emmo999

John Airey there is no performance disadvantage on 3rd rail, it’s just a timetable inconsistency between TOCs. And 378s (LO) and 377 (SE) share the same traction packs

Norbiton Flyer
Norbiton Flyer

In the Victorian era railways companies were required, as part of the Act of Parliament which authorised them to be built and operated, to run at least one train a day serving all stations, with certain requirements about fares and speed. The companies often ran only the minimum one train a day that was fully compliant, charging higher fares and/or skipping stops on others, and ran them at inconvenient times to encourage people to use their other, more lucrative, services. The legal requirements have changed since then, but railways are still not permitted to close a passenger line, or a station, without going through a complex legal process. The line is only considered to be open in law if there is a regular service over it (even if it is only once a week), hence these "parliamentary" services which operate at odd hours when rolling stock and crew are available, and the extra time taken by a longer route/ extra stops is not too disruptive. Many of these services also serve a secondary purpose, as the routes may still be used for diversions, and drivers' route knowledge can be kept up to date by running the odd regular service over the alternative route.
